Orange County, situated in southern Indiana, was a mostly undeveloped and scarcely inhabited area when Indiana became a state in Trails known as "buffalo roads," were believed to have been cut through the dense forests by herds of bison seeking salt. These trails became known for their direct route from the Ohio River to the Wabash River and were used by hunters, missionaries, and settlers passing through the area. In they made their colony near the salt licks that the buffalo were so drawn to.
